Trans lives are not a debate shirt
The Senate, for all its faults, is a highly democratic body, even including a few student representatives. In order to facilitate its functioning, it has created subcommittees known as Boards, each of them headed by a Dean. So the Trans lives are not a debate shirt also I will do this Board of Academic Courses is headed by the Dean (Academic Courses), the Board of Academic Research by the Dean (Academic Research), the Board of Students by the Dean (Students), and so on. These boards are composed of a variety of different individuals and include student representation. This is the larger framework in which student politics in IITM is situated. The student governmental setup is defined by the Students’ Constitution. This is a very important document for us and is highly valued by us. Other IITs have Students’ Constitutions too, as do JNU and AMU. But I doubt that students of JNU are aware that they have a Constitution (and it is badly in need of a revision – it has, for example, no clearly defined list of student representative offices or the functions of those offices). The Students’ Constitution of IITM, on the other hand, is very detailed. It was first drafted between the years 1980–82, and was amended three times until 2011. In 2015, we decided to overhaul the Constitution on the advise of our former Dean (Students) who happened to be one of the original draftees of the Constitution. A committee was created to redraft the Constitution and it presented a new draft, part of which has been passed as amendments to the old Constitution.
